Fiber Optic Specialist

Melita Ltd in Malta is currently looking to recruit a Fiber Optic Specialist to join their team on a full-time basis.

Overview:

As the Fiber Optic Specialist, you will oversee Melita’s Fiber Backbone network, ensuring capacity growth and enhanced resilience. You will work closely with the Fiber Networks Manager, FTTH Manager, and Works Manager to coordinate and execute projects on the fiber backbone. This dynamic role combines desk work, such as updating GIS maps and preparing schedules for the fiber team, with hands-on fieldwork, supervising, training, and supporting fiber technicians during splicing activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain proactive work schedules that ensure the timely and efficient completion of tasks. Anticipate the needs of internal and external stakeholders to stay ahead of their requirements
• Serve as a dependable point of contact, aligning project timelines with the expectations of other teams and external partners
• Motivate, mentor, and guide cross-functional technical teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment
• Identify team skill gaps and arrange training or upskilling initiatives to ensure technical excellence
• Address and resolve team challenges to maintain harmony and productivity
• Evaluate team performance, provide constructive feedback, and recognize achievements to encourage continuous improvement
• Conduct regular inspections to uphold the safety and reliability of fiber optic networks. Address issues such as cable damage or system degradation with prompt repairs or component replacements
• Use advanced tools, including OTDRs, to measure system performance and diagnose issues such as signal loss. Ensure effective troubleshooting and resolution
• Collaborate with engineers to plan and design robust fiber optic networks that meet industry standards and future-proof the infrastructure
• Ensure all activities adhere to relevant standards such as GPON, WDM, and ITU specifications.

Job Requirements:

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in leading teams of technicians, including managing on-site operations.
• Familiarity with Layer 1 and Layer 2 Telecoms industry standards and technologies like GPON, WDM, and ITU.
• Proficiency in fiber optic systems, including splicing and testing techniques.
• Ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues efficiently.
• Willingness to participate in a standby roster for emergency repair assignments.
• Flexibility to work during night time hours to minimize service disruptions for customers during impactful operations.
• A meticulous approach to ensure accuracy in installations and network updates.
• Strong communication skills for interfacing with clients and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
