Sentech Malta FP Limited is currently looking to recruit a Failure Analysis Engineer to join their team on a full-time basis.

The Position:
The main role of this position is to analyze failed gyros both from the production line and returns from the field. The analysis consists of measurement of optical power, identifying signal losses, fibre breakages and fault-finding electronic board down to the component level. This position requires a higher knowledge of Electronics and more hands-on experience with small-pitch components. It will be necessary to file reports of failures, do root cause analysis and follow up of corrective actions at source whilst maintaining close communication with the interested parties. The company has systems in place that aid our engineers and technicians in monitoring failures and get statistics to focus on reducing the most common or recurring ones.

The engineer will be involved in the following:

  • Component Level Troubleshooting: Analyze electronic circuits and individual components on PCBs to pinpoint faults and failures
  • PCB Inspection: Inspect PCBs for visible defects, including solder bridges, cold joints, and component placement errors
  • FOG Analysis: Perform failure analysis on FOGs, including assessing optical components, electronics, and mechanical parts for any defects or malfunctions
  • Utilize Testing Equipment: Use a variety of testing and diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, frequency analyzers, spectrometers, and specialized FOG testing equipment
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of your analysis, findings, and solutions for both PCBs and FOGs. Create comprehensive failure analysis reports
  • Repair and Rework: Perform necessary repairs or rework on PCBs to rectify identified faults. This may involve soldering, desoldering, and component replacement
  • Data Analysis: Analyze test data from both PCBs and FOGs and collect relevant data points to aid in identifying trends or recurring issues
  • Equipment Calibration: Assist in periodical calibration of instruments and specific in-house built equipment used for the manufacturing and Testing of Fiber Optic Gyros 
  • Customer communication: Communicate with customers, get information about failed FOG, raise RMA and follow the merchandise return, compile investigation reports and send necessary feedback
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with design engineers and manufacturing teams to improve PCB designs and FOG manufacturing processes based on the failure analysis insights
  • Quality Control: Ensure that repaired or reworked PCBs and FOGs meet quality standards and specifications. Liaise with Quality to analyze statistics of failure and take corrective actions to reduce reoccurrence
  • Safety: Adhere to safety protocols and best practices when handling electronic components, optical equipment, and specialized FOG testing equipment.


The Applicant
We would like to hear from people who:

  • Having a degree (MQF Level 6) or diploma (MQF Level 5) in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in electronics troubleshooting, PCB analysis, and fibre optic technology are advantageous
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of work experience in a similar role
  • Possess effective communication skills to document findings and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Have a practical, hands-on approach and be proactive in problem-solving
  • The ability to think analytically and methodically when approaching failure analysis tasks in both electronics and optics
  • Take ownership of the role and can work without supervision
  • Take initiative and be self-motivated.


Additional in-house training will be provided to the successful candidate.
