Malta International Airport is currently looking to recruit a MET Observer to join their team on a full-time basis.

Overview:
Malta International Airport plc is looking for dynamic individuals who are passionate about working with people within an Airport environment and are willing to continuously learn, develop, and be part of a high-performance culture. This vacancy has arisen within the MET Office Department on a full-time basis.

Purpose of Position:
Responsible for performing meteorological, hydrological, and other geophysical observations related to both air navigation and civil meteorology.

Main responsibilities:

  • To carry out surface meteorological observations; observe and record the parameters that make up a meteorological message; encode the observations in the standard format; transmit coded information
  • Perform and record routine and non-routine observations at fixed intervals of the weather conditions for civil and aeronautical purposes, including significant weather phenomena as defined in ICAO Annex 3
  • Track significant weather events impacting aviation, such as thunderstorms or low-visibility conditions, and notify forecasters to assist in airport operational planning
  • Guide meteorological observer trainees, ensure completion of Aeronautical Meteorological Observing training, and participate in ongoing professional development and certifications
  • Retain, analyze, and report climatological data as directed, contributing to long-term weather and climate analysis
  • Make special weather observations whenever specified changes occur with respect to surface wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather, clouds and/or air temperature
  • Ensure that observations are prepared and issued by ICAO Annex 3, WMO-No.49, regional and national formats, codes and technical regulations on content, representativeness, and timelines.


Requirements:

  • A BSc. in Earth Systems or BA in Geography or BSc. Mathematics and Physics. is required
  • Have the "Aeronautical Meteorological Observing training course" certification or an equivalent qualification
  • Strong analytical abilities with attention to detail and the capacity to make accurate observations, particularly over long distances. Vision impairments that limit distant observations may disqualify candidates
  • Be energetic, self-motivated and with a positive mindset
  • Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • To perform observations at a distance. Any vision impairment which may obstruct the successful observation of weather phenomena at a distance may render the applicant ineligible for the post
  • Willingness to complete any necessary training as determined by the company.
