We are seeking a tech-savvy/ interim LMS Systems Engineer (eLearning Technical Specialist) to provide advanced technical support and development capabilities to the Training and Learning Technologies Sector (TLTS). The successful candidate will focus on the technical engineering of our Learning Management System (LMS) and developing custom features and AI prototypes within the EUAA Academy LMS ecosystem. 

Key Responsibilities 

LMS System Administration and development

  • Participate in developing new LMS features by selecting, testing, and improving plugins, and implementing the required quality assurance measures to maintain and improve our Learning Technology Ecosystem. 
  • Install, configure, and update third-party or custom LMS plugins. Ensure compatibility with current and upcoming Moodle versions and troubleshoot any plugin-related issues. 
  • Support the maintenance of existing integrations including LTI/API with third-party tools (e.g., SSO, MFA, analytics systems) by executing tests and troubleshooting when required. 
  • Collaborate with the ICT Unit and external service providers in the implementation and maintenance of security measures. 

Learning Technologies Innovation

  • Contribute to the development of custom features based on business requirements and perform testing and quality assurance activities as part of the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). 
  • Participate in UX workshops to co-design and validate front-end / back-end interfaces. 
  • Use AI coding assistants to rapidly build proof of concepts and functional prototypes to speed up the validation of business requirements. 
  • Contribute to the extension of the Learning Technology Ecosystem functionalities by supporting the research, development, and/or integration of AI tools and automations within the current Learning Technology Ecosystem. 

Data Management / Maintenance and Data Quality:

  • Support data accuracy and integrity in our training databases. 
  • Identify and resolve any data-entry-related issues. 
  • Regularly review, clean, and manage user data, learning records, profiles, and role capabilities, including identifying and merging potential duplicate user accounts. 
  • Use MS Power BI to analyse training data and generate and validate data reports. 
  • Manage and optimise Moodle data sources for performance, including routine cleanups and index maintenance. 
  • Ensure that automatic backups of both database and files are functioning properly and perform regular restore tests. 

Technical Documentation:

  • Draft summaries and reports using MS Office applications. 
  • Record and edit on-screen procedures to produce video tutorials for end-users

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience (at least three years). 
  • Certifications in eLearning, Customer Support, IT, or Data Management are a plus. 

Minimum Experience

  • At least one year of experience in a technical role related to eLearning, or web design & development. 

Advantageous Experience

  • Experience working in agile development environments, collaborating with designers, developers, business analysts, and UX professionals. 
  • Experience translating UX wireframes and design specifications into functional prototypes. 
  • Experience using AI tools to create proofs of concept and prototypes. 
  • Hands-on experience development and administration of with Moodle LMS or similar platforms. 
  • Experience with relational databases, user schemas, and data access roles. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and provide effective, timely solutions. 

Desired Skills:

  • Customer-oriented attitude. 
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to LMS or similar platforms. 
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, with a proficient level of written and spoken English (C1), ensuring effective collaboration with colleagues and clear support to end-users. 
  • Proficiency or working knowledge of the following systems and tools is advantageous:  
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) 
  • Learning Management Systems 
  • Ticket management, issue tracking systems, code repositories (e.g., Jira, GitHub) 
  • Student Information Systems or HR Systems 
  • Data visualisation and reporting tools (e.g., MS Power BI) 
  • AI tools for prototyping and proof-of-concept development 
  • Strong technical and/or administration skills with Moodle LMS are a plus.

Non-resident rate: Non-Maltese employees who are moving to Malta for the purposes of employment will be subject to "Non-resident" tax rates for the first 183 days from arrival – these are higher than the standard rates. Once 183 days of residence are reached, income tax will be recalculated for the entire period of employment in the current year from arrival in Malta, and the tax will be adjusted to recover any overpaid tax. If the 183-day period extends into the following year, and 183 days of residence in Malta are not accumulated, the overpaid tax will need to be claimed back from the authorities with personal income tax return.
