Senior back-end Engineer - Remote

Our client in the fintech industry is looking for someone who will be owning a domain end-to-end inside their squad - and influencing how that domain evolves. You write code, but you also shape the system. You bring architectural opinions that the Tech Lead can rely on, you raise the quality bar for the engineers around you, and you take full responsibility for the reliability and maintainability of what you build.

• Build Core Backend Services: Design, develop, and maintain high-performance APIs and backend services consumed by internal squads, external partners, and customer-facing products.
• Own Quality and Testing: Write robust unit and integration tests as a core, non-negotiable part of the development cycle, ensuring stability without relying on separate QA phases.
• Drive Technical Architecture: Actively lead design discussions, author Architectural Decision Records (ADRs), and clearly articulate technical choices to guide how the system evolves.
• Conduct High-Impact PR Reviews: Perform thorough, constructive code reviews focused on design, maintainability, performance, and test coverage to elevate the team's engineering standards.
• Own Documentation: Create and maintain clear, high-quality technical documentation, including OpenAPI specs, service READMEs, and production runbooks.
• Build Shared Tooling: Identify cross-squad needs and contribute reusable code, shared libraries, and platform standards to the wider engineering organization.
• Leverage AI Productivity Tools: Actively integrate AI/LLM tooling into your daily workflow to accelerate code generation, test coverage, debugging, and documentation.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, with at least 3 years working in Java in a production environment at a level where you were making design decisions, not just implementing them.
• Java and Spring Boot depth - you understand the framework, not just its syntax. Dependency injection, Spring Security, Spring Data, transaction management, and testing with Spring Test are all familiar territory.
• REST API design - you know what makes a good API (versioning, error handling, idempotency, pagination)
• Relational database design - schema design, indexing, query optimisation
• Distributed systems depth - proven experience with eventual consistency, idempotency, retry logic, circuit breakers, and failure mode design in a real production system.
• Testing - unit tests with JUnit/Mockito, integration tests with a real database
• Experience with any additional JVM language (Kotlin) or willingness to learn - some squads may introduce Kotlin for new services.

Education and Experience

• Minimum Level 5 Diploma or higher in IT or a related field
