About the Role

The Palliative Day Therapy Coordinator is a clinical and operational leader who designs, delivers, and continuously develops a holistic day therapy programme for patients requiring symptom management, psychosocial support, and social engagement. This role blends clinical oversight with programme development, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to enhance patients’ quality of life while giving families and carers valuable respite.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Clinical Officer, the Coordinator leads the Day Therapy Unit across its clinical, operational, and strategic direction. Key responsibilities include:

Designing, delivering, and continuously improving a day therapy programme that combines therapeutic interventions with social engagement and community outings.

Providing strategic leadership for the Unit, integrating clinically evidenced symptom management with holistic, multidisciplinary care.

Leading the team in delivering coordinated, patient-centred care, with individual plans that reflect each patient’s own goals, dignity, and choices.

Overseeing daily operations, including staffing, scheduling, risk management, and quality improvement, ensuring full regulatory compliance.

Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team and liaising with hospice and hospital colleagues to ensure seamless transitions of care.

Building and sustaining partnerships with families, volunteers, community organisations, and external providers.

Monitoring clinical outcomes and patient experience, driving continuous improvement across the service.

Reporting on key performance indicators and quality outcomes to the Chief Clinical Officer and senior management.

Contributing to organisational quality improvement initiatives and palliative care governance.

Managing budget planning and resource allocation, delivering cost-effective programming without compromising quality.

Promoting evidence-based practice, supporting staff wellbeing, and encouraging patient involvement in programme design and feedback.

Complying with all Hospice Malta policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Upholding the dignity, rights, and confidentiality of patients and their families at all times.

Undertaking any other duties commensurate with the role, as reasonably directed by management.

Attributes

Sound understanding of palliative care principles and practice, with the confidence to oversee a multidisciplinary team delivering symptom management and psychosocial support.

Excellent leadership and people management skills, with strong ability in programme design, implementation, and evaluation.

Sound budget and resource management skills.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to advocate for patients and families within the wider health and social care system.

Ability to translate policy and clinical guidelines into practical, patient-focused care.

Culturally competent and inclusive approach that respects diverse patient preferences and care goals.

Sound judgement in risk assessment and safety planning, including coordinating transport and outings.

Flexible and adaptive approach to scheduling and activities, responsive to varying patient needs such as mobility limitations, cognitive impairment, or complex symptom burdens.

Sound organisational and time-management skills.

Commitment to continuous professional development.

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

Minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s degree, MQF Level 6, in a professional health or social care field (Nursing, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, or a related field), or in Management, Business Administration, or Health and Social Care Management. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by MQRIC recognition issued by MFHEA.

Minimum of 8 years’ relevant working experience, of which at least 3 years must be in a leadership, supervisory, or coordination role.

Valid professional warrant/registration relevant to qualification held, where applicable (e.g. Nursing, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy).

Desirable

Relevant certifications in palliative care, pain and symptom management.

Experience overseeing a day programme, community outreach, or activity-based service, ideally in palliative/clinical care.

Working experience, ideally in a palliative or clinical care setting.

Prior experience working within an NGO or non-profit healthcare setting.

Contract, Location and Benefits
