Role Overview
The Head of Clinical Services will lead and oversee all clinical operations within the Residence, ensuring the delivery of safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to residents. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the role will be responsible for managing clinical standards, supporting and developing the nursing team, maintaining regulatory compliance, and coordinating with healthcare professionals, families, and external stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to resident care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care Management: Ensure the consistent delivery of safe, respectful, and individualised care while promoting the dignity, comfort, and wellbeing of all residents.
  • Clinical Governance: Develop, review, implement, and monitor clinical procedures, protocols, and standards to ensure effective practices are followed across the clinical team.
  • Team Leadership: Manage the recruitment, onboarding, training, supervision, and ongoing development of clinical staff while fostering a positive and accountable working environment.
  • Quality and Compliance: Maintain high standards of clinical practice by ensuring adherence to healthcare regulations, health and safety requirements, medication management procedures, and good governance principles.
  • Resident Care Coordination: Oversee the maintenance of accurate clinical documentation, incident reporting, care planning, and coordination of healthcare services, including medical appointments, laboratory services, and specialist consultations.
  • Operational Management: Manage clinical resources, budgets, and stock levels effectively, ensuring operational efficiency and value for money within the Residence.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate with doctors, allied healthcare professionals, internal departments, external service providers, and community organisations to support a comprehensive care approach.
  • Family and Stakeholder Communication: Maintain professional relationships with residents’ relatives, government entities, healthcare partners, and other relevant stakeholders, providing guidance, information, and support when required.
  • Pharmacy and Medication Oversight: Manage medication-related processes, including the administration of government-supported schemes, coordination with pharmacy providers, and appropriate handling of clinical supplies.
  • Resident Activities and Wellbeing: Support the planning and organisation of active ageing initiatives and activities that enhance residents’ quality of life and overall wellbeing.
  • Leadership Support: Provide operational support to senior management and deputise for line superiors when required, including participation in an on-call rota where applicable.

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes

  • ​​​​Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing, Medicine, Healthcare Administration, or a related clinical field.
  • Professional Registration: Active registration with the relevant national healthcare regulatory body.
  • Experience: Proven experience within a clinical leadership or senior nursing management position, preferably within elderly care, residential care, or a similar healthcare environment.
  • Language Skills: An excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. Proficiency in Maltese would be an asset.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication abilities, with the confidence to engage effectively with residents, families, healthcare professionals, and external stakeholders.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A compassionate and approachable leader with the ability to build trust, encourage teamwork, and maintain positive relationships with residents and colleagues.
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of clinical procedures, healthcare standards, medication management, documentation requirements, and regulatory compliance within a care setting.
  • Organisation: Excellent organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, oversee complex care arrangements, and ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Self-Motivated: A proactive and dependable professional who demonstrates initiative, accountability, and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to assess challenges, make sound decisions, and implement effective solutions while maintaining a resident-centred approach.
