About the Department

The Financial Stability function is responsible for identifying and assessing risks that may threaten the stability of the financial system and the broader economy. This includes analysing systemic risks and evaluating how developments in the domestic economy, the financial services sector, and the external environment may influence the resilience of the financial system. The function is composed of two complementary teams. The Financial Stability Team focuses on the assessment and monitoring of systemic and sector-specific risks through the use of sensitivity analysis, stress testing and forward-looking risk assessments. This work is complemented by macroprudential research across the banking, insurance, and securities sectors, as well as broader areas such as cyber, climate, geopolitical and concentration risks. It also contributes to the design and calibration of macroprudential policies, assessing their impact and effectiveness. The Intelligence and Research Team is responsible for the function’s statistical capabilities, to carry out quantitative and qualitative research and analysis to assess the national and global economic environment and financial markets, structural shifts as well as market practices that may influence the evolution of the financial services sector. The team also evaluates the impact of these developments, including any measures and initiatives proposed to address them.

About the Role

As a Junior Analyst (Research and Analysis) within the Intelligence and Research team you will be assigned to carry out work which will include the following duties:

  • Conducting research and assisting in the development of data models to support the MFSA strategic priority areas with a focus on new business models and innovation, particularly in areas such as sustainable finance, digital transformation and AI;
  • Assisting in qualitative and quantitative market-wide research;
  • Contributing to impact assessments and cost benefit analysis to evaluate the implications of regulatory changes;
  • Contributing to the collection of the statistical capabilities of the function;
  • Assisting in the drafting of analytical reports and technical papers, both for internal and publication purposes;
  • Attending and contributing to technical meetings within the MFSA as well as at national and international level;
  • Carrying out any other responsibilities delegated by the line manager or other members of senior leadership in line with the function’s remit and/or the Authority`s exigencies.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Head and/or as may be required by the MFSA from time to time based on the exigencies of the Authority.

About you

We are looking for candidates with strong academic background in statistics, mathematics, banking and finance, economics or other relevant fields of study at National Qualification Framework Level 6 or better, duly certified by the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC) or a widely recognised professional qualification at a comparable level.

Candidates with experience of working with business intelligence tools, such as MS PowerBI, and who have knowledge of programming languages and data analysis packages, such as R, Python or SQL, will be considered as an asset.

If you do not have the necessary academic or professional qualifications but you have at least five (5) years of relevant experience in a similar role, we would still be interested in speaking with you.

The selected candidate is expected to be a confident individual who feels at ease working in a multidisciplinary environment, is flexible, proactive, dynamic, has the ability to prioritise tasks, has a critical and analytical mind-set and a high attention to detail even when under time pressure. The individual is also required to demonstrate good research and have excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
