Our client is a leading maritime company operating a fleet of approximately 35 vessels across the Mediterranean, supporting commercial fishing and aquaculture operations. They are seeking an experienced Fleet Mechanical Superintendent to oversee the mechanical performance and reliability of their fleet, ensuring vessels operate safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime.

Position Summary

The Fleet Mechanical Superintendent will be responsible for managing the mechanical condition of the company's fleet, including propulsion systems, hydraulics, deck machinery, and auxiliary equipment. Working closely with the Fleet Technical Manager, the successful candidate will lead maintenance planning, fault diagnosis, and repair coordination while ensuring the highest standards of reliability and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the mechanical condition and performance of engines, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, deck machinery, and auxiliary equipment across the fleet.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and coordinate repair activities with workshops, contractors, and shipyards.
  • Plan and prioritise preventive and corrective maintenance programmes.
  • Specify spare parts and provide technical support for procurement activities.
  • Monitor equipment performance and lead root cause investigations following mechanical failures.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to vessel masters, both remotely and on-site.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and contribute to maintenance planning and budgeting.
  • Ensure mechanical work is carried out safely and in accordance with company standards and industry regulations.
  • Work closely with operational teams to maximise vessel availability and minimise downtime.

Requirements

  • Marine Engineering qualification or an equivalent mechanical engineering or technical trade qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in marine engineering, mechanical superintendent, or workshop supervisory roles.
  • Strong diagnostic experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and deck machinery.
  • Previous experience working with small to medium-sized commercial or fishing vessels is preferred.
  • Experience within the fishing or aquaculture industry will be considered an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with vessel crews, contractors, and management.
  • Willingness to travel across Malta and the Mediterranean region when required.
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of Maltese or Italian will be considered an asset.
  • Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems will be considered an advantage.
  • Valid driving licence.
