Senior Database & Middleware Engineer

PTL Limited is seeking to recruit a Senior Database & Middleware Engineer to join its Database & Middleware Services Team. This is a senior technical role for an experienced professional with strong hands-on expertise and an engineering mindset, capable of designing, optimizing, and supporting database and middleware platforms across enterprise environments.

THE POSITION

Based in Malta and reporting to the Head of Technical Solutions, the Senior Database & Middleware Engineer shall be responsible for the design, implementation, optimisation, and governance of database and middleware solutions across client and internal environments. The role goes beyond day-to-day administration and focuses on performance engineering, high availability design, automation, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will take ownership of complex technical challenges, act as a senior escalation point, and contribute to solution design alongside architects and delivery teams. Responsibilities include ensuring database and middleware platforms are secure, scalable, and performant, while supporting backup, disaster recovery, and monitoring practices aligned with service level requirements.

The role also involves mentoring junior team members, contributing to technical standards and best practices, and supporting pre-sales and project delivery activities through technical input during solution scoping and implementation. Participation in an on-call rota is required.

THR REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will hold an MQF Level 6 qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, together with a minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in database and/or middleware administration.

Candidates should have hands-on experience with at least one major relational database platform such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or IBM DB2, including installation, configuration, patching, and performance tuning. A strong understanding of backup, restore, and recovery processes, as well as high availability and disaster recovery concepts, is required.

A good working knowledge of SQL scripting and query writing is expected, along with experience in middleware technologies and monitoring tools. Exposure to cloud-based database services, scripting or automation skills, and experience in managed services environments will be considered an advantage. Relevant certifications are also considered an asset. A clean police conduct is required.
