Group Finance Lead

Threls Ltd.

Published on 25 May 2026

Expires in 20 days (24 Jun 2026)

Threls is a boutique software delivery company headquartered in Gozo, with additional offices in Malta, Salamanca (Spain), and Tallinn. We serve clients worldwide. We build software for companies that care about how the work is done — not just what gets shipped. We are self-funded, independent, and answer only to our clients and to each other.

We are hiring a Group Finance Lead to run the cost, compliance, and balance sheet side of the finance function across the entire Threls Group — covering both our Custom Solutions business and our Twine product. You will report directly to Karl, one of our co-founders. The finance team itself is two people: you, and our Group Revenue Lead who owns the revenue and operations side. You work as peers, with no hierarchy between you.

Before you apply, please read the full job description: https://www.threls.com/careers/finance-lead. It covers the philosophy behind the role, our framework, our in-person policy with its reasoning, and an honest section on who this role is not for. It also ends with seven questions we will ask you to address in your cover letter — applying without one will not move you forward.

Tasks

A note on context before the list.

Threls Group is around €5M in revenue, 50+ people, three legal entities — with a finance function of just three people: Karl (our co-founder), you, and the Revenue Lead. We intend to keep it that way.

Because the team is small by design, there is no fixed task list in the traditional sense. Beyond the non-negotiable monthly rhythm, the work is whatever keeps the Group's financial foundation solid and clear. This role is not designed to be draining. No routine overtime. There will be occasional moments where the work demands more — audit season, a closing, a one-off piece of analysis — but those are exceptions, not the rhythm. The rest of the time, the work fits inside your hours by design.

With that framing, here is what you will own:

  • Cost accounting end-to-end across the Threls Group — AP, vendor management, expense coding, cost allocations, balance sheet reconciliations, and monthly cost reporting for both Threls Custom Solutions and Twine.
  • Monthly management accounts, project profitability analysis, variance commentary with clear recommendations, and budget preparation across the Group. Numbers that tell a story, not just fill a spreadsheet.
  • Statutory compliance and audit coordination across all three Threls entities, ensuring the company is audit-ready every day — not just at year-end.
  • Day-to-day financial operations — reconciliations, clean audit-ready documentation, and monitoring of financial terms in client agreements, SLAs, and vendor contracts.
  • Driving the automation agenda inside finance. Identifying the repetitive work, choosing the right tools, and progressively handing off backwards-looking tasks to technology so the team can focus forward.
  • Working as the senior voice in finance alongside the Revenue Lead — ensuring cost and revenue connect cleanly and the CFO always has the complete financial picture without having to chase either of you for it.

Requirements

We’re Looking For:

  • Qualified accountant holding a warrant (ACCA, ACA, or equivalent), with post-qualification experience in a senior finance role. Big 4 background is a plus but not essential — what matters is depth of ownership and judgment.
  • Strong management and financial accounting background — genuine understanding, not just bookkeeping mechanics.
  • Multi-entity and multi-currency experience. Malta and/or EU accounting experience is an advantage; we operate in Malta and Estonia.
  • Strong proficiency in Xero (our primary accounting system) and Excel or Sheets for reporting and reconciliation.
  • Curiosity about the legal and contractual side of finance. You will be monitoring financial terms in client agreements, SLAs, and vendor contracts — your judgment on commercial boundaries matters.
  • Comfortable with AI tools and automation. You see them as a resource, not a threat, and you are willing to adopt them to spend your time on work that actually requires human judgment.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for technology and curiosity about how software companies work. You do not need a technical background, but you should care about the context you are operating in.
  • Structured, proactive communicator. You surface risks with proposed solutions, not just problems. You give updates before they are asked for. You do not avoid difficult conversations — including with the CFO when the numbers are not what anyone wanted to hear.
  • Ownership without dependency. Everything in your domain runs without anyone chasing you, and your documentation is clean enough that anyone could pick up your work.
  • Genuine alignment with why Threls exists — to free people from noise and return them to what really matters. Not as a box to tick. As a real reason you chose to be here.

Benefits

  • Transparent salary range: €25,000 – €65,000 per year, calibrated to experience and depth of ownership. The range is wide deliberately — we do not have a fixed grade. We calibrate the offer to the person.
  • Full-time or reduced hours. We are genuinely open to flexibility if the work gets done to the standard we need. The one condition: this cannot be a second job. We are asking for your full professional focus during the hours we agree on.
  • Self-funded and independent. Threls has no investors setting targets that override our judgment. Financial decisions are made on the basis of what is right — not what looks good on a quarterly deck.
  • Work-life harmony as a practice, not a phrase. During your working hours, we want your full focus — no second job, no part-time role on the side, no freelance work running in parallel. We are hiring people who care deeply about this work and love doing it well. Once those hours end, your time is genuinely yours. Spend it with the people you love, on the things that restore you. We do not celebrate people who work until midnight, and we do not want to be anyone's backup plan.
  • Everything else — the full picture of how we work, the rhythm we protect, and the culture we hold — is documented on our careers page: https://www.threls.com/about-us/careers

A note on our process before you apply.

We are not in a rush. This posting will stay open until we find the right person — however long that takes. Every applicant will receive a clear answer from us within one month. Yes or no. No second-choice list, no holding pattern.

Two things to confirm before you click apply:

  • First, have you read the full JD in full? If any of it changes your mind, now is the moment — better now than after an interview.
  • Second, have you prepared your cover letter answering the seven questions at the end of the JD? The next step on Join.com asks you to upload it alongside your CV. Applications without a cover letter addressing the questions will not be read.

If the vision resonates and the role still fits, we would love to hear from you.
