Lawnmarket Litigation Ltd is looking to recruit an English-speaking Junior Lawyer to be employed as a Litigation Officer for commercial debt recovery and tribunal advocacy. The ideal candidate to support its Malta and UK-based operations. The role will entail the provision of litigation and advocacy on behalf of plaintiff clients in employment and commercial debt recovery matters.

Lawnmarket Litaigation Ltd (Lawnmarket) provides outsourced advocacy and litigation support services to an international client base across reputable common law jurisdictions. These services include sales and client on-boarding, claims handling and administration, case management, and tribunal advocacy functions. Lawnmarket is not a law firm. However, the successful candidates will be required to make appearances before foreign tribunals in debt recovery and employment matters. The advocacy nature of the role necessitates a significant degree of resilience and the ability to deal effectively with plaintiffs and defendants. As such, we are seeking candidates with at least one year of litigation experience in private legal practice. However, exceptional candidates who may not have accrued one year of litigation experience in private legal practice, but who can nevertheless demonstrate exceptional experience in tribunal advocacy, are nevertheless welcome to apply.

This Role will entail:

  • Preparing for and conducting appearances in a diverse range of small claims disputes;
  • Drafting applications, submissions, witness statements, and related documents;
  • Maintaining a portfolio of claims and taking responsibility for ensuring such claims are progressed through the litigation process on a timely basis observing all deadlines;
  • Responding to client enquiries and ensuring clients are kept updated with the progress of their claim;
  • Updating practice management software and ensuring client and tribunal interactions are recorded in accordance with policies and procedures;
  • Reviewing and exchanging settlement documentation to implement settlement agreements;
  • Interviewing clients and taking instructions;
  • Assisting other members of the team with tasks as required.


Hours of Work:
Candidates must be prepared to work regular evening and overnight hours. For example, it is anticipated that the hours of work might be as follows (subject to mutual agreement):

  • 7:00pm to 3:00am; or
  • 11:00pm to 7:00am.

The Company will also consider a request to work a four-day working week. If agreed, the hours of work applicable to such an arrangement would be 8:30 pm to 7:00 am four days per week - providing a unique opportunity for a regular long weekend.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Law degree obtained from the University of Malta or a reputable institution in a common-law jurisdiction;
  • Admission to legal practice in a recognised common-law jurisdiction;
  • Superior communication skills in English (spoken and written);
  • Motivated self-starters with a mature attitude and a flexible approach to work;
  • No criminal record and satisfactory outcome of background checks;
  • Provision of a functional laptop computer loaded with Microsoft Office;
  • High-quality internet access at home (working from home applicable on commencement due to COVID-19);
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • A resilient and assertive nature; and
  • Demonstrated organisational skills and a willingness to be accountable for case progression and litigation outcomes.
