Linux Systems Engineer

A well-established Financial Institution within the banking sector is looking for a Linux Systems Engineer to join its IT team. Individuals must be able to work on their initiative with minimal supervision, be hard-working and be meticulous in their work.  The Linux System Engineer will drive the organisation’s Systems and Infrastructure to assure system uptimes and cater for future expansion based on the Bank’s needs.

Responsibilities

• Reviewing and implementing the necessary changes to the organisation’s infrastructure;
• Maintaining and upgrading any physical servers and storage devices required to run the organisations infrastructure;
• Monitoring of systems and infrastructure, and the setup of additional monitoring objects to assure visibility of the organisation’s systems;
• Setting up mechanisms and systems to assure business continuity;
• Coordinating and overseeing planned failovers of all systems;
• Assuring proper backup mechanisms are in place;
• Assuring system up-time;
• Rolling out of virtual servers to cater for additional services as per the organisation’s requirements;
• Coordinating with the Security and Network Engineer on Security and Network projects.

• Have a minimum of 3 years working in the IT field with a minimum of 1-year experience in a similar post
• Have strong analytical skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Practical knowledge of non-Windows environments, such as Red Hat Linux and other variants of this OS is a must;
• Practical knowledge of Apache HTTPD server;
• Good experience with virtualization, mainly focusing on VMWare;
• Practical experience with MySQL. Ideally one would know how to setup the environment, handle backups and setup mechanisms to cater for business continuity and disaster recovery;
• Knowledgeable of backup technologies, with practical experience of setting up and configuring of backup solutions, mainly Veeam.
• Experience with scripting languages, particularly Linux Bash. Some basic knowledge of php and Python will also be considered an asset;
• Knowledge of monitoring solutions such as Nagios and PRTG will be considered an asset;
• Knowledge of the entire TCP\IP, OSI network protocol stack, such as (IP\TCP, ICMP\UDP\SMTP\POP3\HTTP\FTP\SSH);
• Experience with networking and networking technologies and protocols.

• Bachelor's degree/ Diploma in IT or IT certifications ideally specialising on IT infrastructure
