Trust Payments has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join their team.

How will you make an impact in this role?

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join our Risk Management team. This role is critical in evaluating merchant applications, assessing risk profiles, and making informed underwriting decisions to protect the company while supporting business growth. The Senior Underwriter will review and complete underwriting and credit analysis of applications by applying sound underwriting judgment and adhering to company policy. The role involves supporting the Underwriting Team Lead in communicating company goals and deadlines, as well as helping to motivate team members and train new starters.

What We Expect of You, Day To Day:

  • Evaluate merchant applications for payment processing services, conducting thorough risk assessments
  • Analyse financial statements, business models, and credit reports to determine merchant risk levels
  • Make independent underwriting decisions based on established risk criteria and company policies
  • Review high-risk or complex merchant applications, providing expert recommendations
  • Collaborate with Sales, Compliance and Fraud teams to balance risk management with business objectives
  • Stay current with industry regulations, card scheme rules and emerging fraud trends
  • Provide guidance to junior underwriters and contribute to the development of underwriting policies
  • Prepare detailed reports on underwriting activities and risk metrics
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting standards, instructions and best practices to minimise risk and maximise efficiency
  • Maintain compliance with Company and Card Scheme rules and policies
  • Calculate financial risk exposure and implement appropriate risk mitigation measures
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement and share best practices
  • Assist in training new team members
  • Build strong partnerships with other teams such as BRO and Operations

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of underwriting experience within merchant acquiring, payment processing or financial services
  • In-depth knowledge of card scheme regulations (Visa, Mastercard) and payment industry compliance requirements
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret financial statements and assess business viability
  • Experience with AML/KYC procedures and fraud detection methodologies
  • Excellent decision-making abilities with attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or related field
  • Knowledge of high-risk merchant categories and appropriate risk mitigation strategies
  • Experience with underwriting automation systems and risk scoring models
  • Analytical capabilities to identify and assess potential fraud and compliance issues
  • Ability to priorities effectively to ensure timely achievement of goals
