In 1899 Carmelo Debono set up a Jewellery manufacturing business in Strada Forni Valletta and in 1929 opened his first Jewellery shop in Merchants Street Valletta.
In 1932 he was joined by his eldest son Joseph and later by his other three sons, by which time the firm started operating under the name C. Debono & Sons. The sector was still evolving at the time, in fact jewellery shops as we know them today were very few. Most of the jewellery was either purchased from the few quaint workshops or made to one’s to own specification.
In 1942 Joseph decided to leave his father’s business to venture on his own even though running a business during the war was not an easy task. In fact over the next seven years Joseph lost two different outlets during air raids, loosing the bulk of his stock amongst the debris every time. In 1949 he finally firmly established himself under the business name of Jos Debono Jewellery when he acquired a property in Merchants Street, Valletta.
The outlet’s name was later changed to Jos. Debono & Sons Jewellers, after his two eldest sons joined the business in the early sixties. Then in 1980 shortly after a third son joined the business the three brothers took the business over from their father and formed the company Jos. Debono Jewellers. Today the company is managed by Joseph and Ramon Debono.
Jos. Debono Jewellers operates a shop in St. Lucia Street Valletta under it's own brand name as well as Pavilion Jewellers in Republic Street and a Swarovski boutique at the Malta International Airport.
